About JRC

The Joint Research Centre (JRC) is the European Commission’s science and knowledge service, which provides independent scientific analysies to support the EU policies.

Established in 1960, it is a leading research campus in Europe, covering a huge range of topics, such as Climate change, Sustainability, Environment, Space, Security, Migration, Economy, Energy, Transport, Bio and Nanotechnology, Nuclear safety and security, Threat detection, Health Protection.

The JRC has six sites in five European countries: Ispra in Italy, Brussels and Geel in Belgium, Karlsruhe in Germany, Petten in the Netherlands and Seville in Spain.

Working for the JRC means contributing to the common European knowledge being integrated in a multicultural and stimulating environment.

The ISPRA site

The largest site, hosting more than 2000 people, is located in Ispra.

This village of about 5000 people lies on the shores of the beautiful lake Maggiore, close to the Alps.

It is around 60 km north-west of Milan city, and Milano Malpensa airport is only 30 km away.

A free of charge JRC bus service connecting to all the nearby towns is available.

Ispra offers all the main facilities, such as schools, medical services and sport clubs.

The local community is highly integrated with the JRC employees, and the location offers many opportunities for leisure activities ranging from sunbathing, windsurfing and biking around the lake to skiing, hiking and climbing in the mountains.

Multicultural events are also frequent.

ARCADIA SIT managers are always available for information and support in the JRC Ispra site.
